In this (interactive) lecture I would like to delve into one of the most profound, formative and impacting experience that ALL of us have been through being born, and many of us will go through again when giving birth to new life. And how our society is shaping the way we, as individuals and as a collective, relate to childbirth. In this society, the cultural input is very defining in the narrative that is formed, the knowledge that transpires and informs a new generation and consequently how both women and men and babies alike are affected by it. In a globalized world, with media representations, stories and images that are rather homogeneous in style and form, how are we able to relate our Jewish identities in these narratives? Can we read the globalized imagery and visual input against the grain, taking our inspiration from Jewish heroines that have agency and claim their authoritative knowledge? Can this Jewish reading of sexuality and childbirth provide a much-needed empowerment in the field of cultural representation of childbirth as well as in the actual practice of childbirth? This lecture aims to both provide sound cutting edge academic research into the representation of childbirth in the media and its impact, inspire knowledge about Jewish heroines in order to impact a new generation of heroines (and heroes) with empowerment in their sexuality, reproductive health and childbirth, and come to these analyses in an interactive rereading of visuals and stories. Redefining together how our Jewish identity and belonging can support us in this process.
